Thank you for posting this link Chris.

I shared the link with family and friends, many of which never knew the depth of how ham radio could help in natural disasters. Likewise listening has caused a number of listeners to review their own person readiness for hardship. Many would never have guessed that internet, cell phones and use of credit / debit cards could be indefinitely disabled.

It just goes to show you what you can do with only 20 Watts and a wire!

I discovered this guy last night. He is a professional sky diver and is passionate about Ham Radio... so... what does that mean?

He jumps out of perfectly good airplanes at 14,000 ft and as he floats down to the ground, he is either making dozens of "parachute mobile" contacts on 52 direct... or... he is working HF sideband on an Icom 705 (or 7300) and an endfed antenna. If you get some time today, check out his channel. His main channel link is below..   and then ive added a couple others as well for the busy ham who doesn't need to be bothered with searching the site:

Im not sure why my emails to the reflector always show that they are addressed to mark reiter... I guess that is how my email client insists on classifying the address. I will delete it from my cache again.  My email was addressed to all bvarc.

I discovered this guy last night. He is a professional sky diver and is passionate about Ham Radio... so... what does that mean?

He jumps out of perfectly good airplanes at 14,000 ft and as he floats down to the ground, he is either making dozens of "parachute mobile" contacts on 52 direct... or... he is working HF sideband on an Icom 705 (or 7300) and an endfed antenna. If you get some time today, check out his channel. His main channel link is below..   and then ive added a couple others as well for the busy ham who doesn't need to be bothered with searching the site:

Subject: [BVARC] SK notice

I wanted to pass along some news about a silent key.  Bill Amos, N4ELU was a club member for a while until his health declined and was placed into a nursing facility.  He passed away this morning quietly after battling debilitating nerve damage due to falls.

He REALLY enjoyed ham radio and had a little handheld by his bedside in the nursing home.

There will be no funeral.  Just keep the family in your prayers if you wish.  He will be dearly missed.

Interesting from a jumpers standpoint.    Once under canopy, you gotta do
something to kill time, especially from 10 grand on down under a square is
a long time.

Question?.how do you become a ?professional? skydiver?   Ex-sport hobby
parachutists wud like to know?..  tnx.

I think the difference between amateur and pro is the ability to charge money? maybe he is a skydiver for hire.

$$$ Tandem jumps probably.   Most skydivers I knew wud spend their earnings

Nizar Mullani, K0NM.  Not only what he says in the article, but as I know
him, also a QST published antenna designer and self trained and published
(CQ), late in life, CW method and OP.

General Membership Meeting October 10th at 7:30 PM

Community Volunteer Fire Department Community Center, 16005 Bellaire Blvd, Houston 77083

The program will be DMR Radio Basics: Rick Broussard, N5KJN, a DMR user for several years, will describe the ins and outs of digital mobile radio, also known as DMR. He will talk about the general way the radio works, how the repeaters are connected and how the repeaters are controlled by a ?C-bridge.? Rick will also go over some of the programming basics on DMR.

Rick has been using DMR radios for many years and is one of the C-bridge operators for a greater Houston network. Rick has over the years done several presentations about DMR as well as programming classes. Rick also does presentations on DMR at the Greater Houston HamFest.

So come on out to get answers to your questions about DMR radio!

Subject: [BVARC] FS: Ameritron AL-1500 amp

AMERITRON AL-1500 AMP...

This amp was built by Ameritron in Toledo - not MFJ (good). It is 
fully upgraded with brand new boards from CTR Engineering (W8JI). He 
is the original designer of the amp. There are three upgraded boards: 
Filter Cap board, Rectifier board & Start-Step board. The amp has not 
been on the air since the upgrades were installed. In other words, 
most of the circuitry in this amp is brand new.

The amp was not purchased new and has an early serial number of 788. 
I don't know its history but it is very clean. It came with a soft 
tube that eventually failed though I did not run it hard. This lead 
me to investigate the VHF parasitic suppression kits then offered by 
Rich Measures, AG6K (now SK). This kit is also installed and they are 
no longer available.

But FYI, there has been considerable debate over whether tube damage 
from VHF parasitics is a real thing. There was this hissy fight 
on-line between Measures and the amp's designer (W8JI) where both 
behaved like children. W8JI says there is no parasitic problem and 
the kit has no benefit. Measures says it protects the tube and 
bandswitch, and also makes the amp tune more easily (which I attest 
to). Nobody says it does harm. There is a QST article and a rebuttal. 
The AG6K information is still on-line. Do your own reading. Not many 
of these amp have the VHF protection.

Also, I've replaced the tube with an Eimac 3CPX1500A7 which is an MRI 
pull. To check the tube and all the upgrades I brought the amp to 
Dallas for testing at the Array Solutions / WX0B amp lab. Jay ran the 
tests with his big dummy load on 40m. Tube outputs 1500w easy at 53w 
of drive and only 20ma of grid current. This is the way you want to 
run it for long tube life. We pushed the envelope and got 2250w with 
95w of drive, as measured with an Array Solutions Power Master. Tube 
is good and puts out full power. I have not had this amp on the air 
at all since the improvements.

Price is $2400 with good tube, brand new PC boards and VHF 
suppression. Prior to MFJ closing the doors, new AL-1500's (without 
these upgrades) listed for $3900 at DX Engineering WITHOUT A TUBE.

model #AHQ06LYC? for Beryl when I had a small generator and could

not use my 5 ton unit. The purchase price from Lowe's was/is $229

QTH only in the north part of Houston Heights just south of loop

610 and west of Yale.? This is a sweet little unit and makes very cold

air and draws only 4 amps on 120VAC.? It comes with a remote unit

for control and all documentation.

I read a CNN Science article about the "Ghost Ship of the Pacific" -- The
USS Stewart DD 224, a Clemson Class Destroyer.   USS Stewart???  Wait a
minute... A bit of research.....

There have been 3 ships named as such.....
USS Stewart -- DD-13  Bainbridge Class Destroyer 1902 to 1919

USS Stewart  -- DD-224  Clemson Class Destroyer 1920 and scuttled in 1946
The Ghost Ship recently found in 3500 feet of water off Northern W6 land.

USS Stewart -- DE-238, Edsall class Destroyer Escort 943 to 1947...now a
museum ship as we know it.

As many of you may havealready heard, Wayne Wright, KA5QDG, passed away on Friday, October 11, 2024.Wayne had been battling the affects of a heart attack that he had lastyear.??

Wayne, who was retiredfrom the radio communication section of Union Pacific Railroad, was the mainoperator of repeaters in the greater Houston area. Through Houston AmateurMobile Society (HAMS), he, along with other hams, built a network of over 40 repeatersproviding communication support for everything from the Wings Over Houston AirShow to the Houston Marathon to the MS150 Bike Ride. Wayne was truly a pillarand driving force in the local HAM community.?

I met Wayne overtwenty-five years ago during the interference problems that BVARC wasexperiencing. Wayne was the main team member that helped locate and identifythe hams that were jamming the BVARC repeater. Wayne was also an"Elmer" to many hams in the Houston area and providing support to thehobby that he genuinely loved. He will be missed but Wayne's presence willcontinue with the knowledge that he gave the amateur radio community.

Having recently sold my lake cabin, I have a lot of equipment for sale from there? I will periodically put 2 or 3 items on thereflector.? Most are amateurradio related.? There are also a lot oftools that a ham could use.At this time, I'm listing 2 items:1.?????A Yaesu FL-2100B amplifier for $395 with originalmanual.? It puts out a full 500 to 600Watts depending on the band.2.?????A MFJ 989C Full Power Tuner for $325 with manual.
Both of these I used regularly at the lake and are ingood working order.

I'm looking for a maybe 1 or 2 more guys to help with taking down my SteppIR
this coming Saturday.

 

I have 3 plus myself for now.always good to have another hand or two. It
shouldn't take long.also need to replace the rotator and mast. Other work
may include raising the 18HT after replacing the damaged center wire and
replacing some LMR600 connectors. 

 

I plan to do some refurb to the SteppIR and raise it back up sometime in
November.

 

We plan to meet at 9am at my  place. Payment will be 9ers or Witt Pitt BBQ
since Swinging Door is gone ;-( . 

 

Sorry for the late notice but please let me know today or tomorrow at the
latest.

Kim,

 

Perfect timing for this information. I had some problems yesterday with my rotator swap out?

 

1.	Removed existing bad rotator (which was no easy task since the entire antenna and mast had to be raised about 6 inches and held there).
2.	Hauled up the rotator I rebuilt which had been resistance verified, but not operation tested on the bench. Plugged it in for a test and it worked (first time). Installed into the tower. Tested again and the damn thing would not turn, no matter what we tried. Seems like the motor is jammed or the brake wedge is not retracting, although we do hear the brake solenoid operate?
3.	Hauled up the ?new? $20 rotator, plugged in to cable. No position feedback from the pot!! It is obvious that this rotator had never been installed or even outside. No weathering, paper label on bottom was intact. But still no position feedback from the pot. ?
4.	Tested Green Heron output in the shack?all ok. Tested the GH output to the terminal strip in the JB at bottom of the tower? all ok. (We did not test to the connector however? but seems unlikely that the problem is there or in the cable going up the tower?but you never know?!). 
5.	We then decided to call it a day. ? ?

 

I?m ordering the parts on the document from Mouser so I can bench test the rotators? I just need a small piece of rotator cable? Maybe I have some in the barn and I know I could just use some single conductors, but it would be convenient with some rotator cable. Only need a couple feet?

 

FYI, I did originally swap out the cap in the GH controller, thinking it was the problem, but there was no change when I did that. All voltages coming out the GH seems ok, and resistance checks of the rebuilt rotator were also ok?

 

The SteppIR is back to full height but fixed NE/SW. I had decided to just replace the rotator since contest season is coming up (per Dave?s suggestion). I think I?ll wait till spring for the complete refurb job. We didn?t get to the 18HT, still need to replace the center wire anyway?

 

So much for progress, huh?

Yes, a wiring fault is a possibility. Something to check out next weekend, I guess.

 

Ed, W5GCX has offered to bring me some rotor cable, but thanks. I ordered the parts today, should get them soon. In the meantime I will make resistance checks again. Next weekend, with some help I should be able to verify cable connections.

Hi Allen,

 

Sounds like a frustrating day, and I???m sure disappointing.  When you said it worked the first time plugged in before installing into the tower, I assume you meant you tested it up on the tower.  If so, a wiring fault would seem unlikely unless it was an intermittent open conductor or connection at the plug that was just sensitive to moving the cable.   As you said you never know.    Another possibility that comes to mind would be if the mast is in a misalignment bind, or a frozen up thrust bearing.   The lack of feedback on the second rotor could be unrelated and just a bad pot in the rotor.

 

I have some rotor cable up at the farm I can bring back with me after the contest next weekend if you can???t find some here in Houston.

myself. Any of the board positions mentioned in the Beacon are available.

Greetings  NARS, BVARC,  As most of you know Jeanne and I are moving to 6
land to be near family.  I have been collecting garage junk for the last
twenty five years wed have been here but I brought a truck load with us when
we came here.

I don?t have a bunch of high power transceivers but some old military test
equipment, a sweep generator and microwave pulse generator.  I have some
modest lengths of LDF ?? hardline.  Lots of PVC pipe.  

We should be home all day tomorrow packing and sorting.
