From kori113 at gmail.com Wed Nov 1 22:25:03 2023 From: kori113 at gmail.com (Kori Rahman) Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2023 22:25:03 -0500 Subject: [BVARC] Vice President's Update November 2023 Message-ID: Hello everyone, It is finally November! This is an important month for the club and for our nation. We celebrate a bountiful harvest with our family and friends, and... WE VOTE. Of course with our coming general meeting the club will gather for a chili supper prepared by the wonderful BVARC food team, AND we hold our elections for board positions that are up this year. Please come out to vote at the meeting (Thursday November *9th* at 7pm), or if you cannot make it in person you can provide a proxy vote following the instructions from our election committee Rick Hiller's email (excerpt at the bottom of this email). Voting CANNOT be done via zoom, but the meeting will be streamed and you will be able to find the link on our website. A quorum of at least 34 members in attendance is needed so come in-person if you can. Otherwise, we have a usual jam packed month with lots of opportunities to hangout and get on the radio (and if you get tired of the family drama on Thanksgiving, you can always put your call out on the 146.94MHz repeater and have fun then too! LOL). A quick reminder for folks: I have created a calendar for those who use a Google (or Apple) calendar app. The link is here and when you click on it you should be prompted to add the BVARC Calendar to your calendar app. All events for the next 30 days should be on that calendar as well as others as we confirm their dates. Don't forget to check out our website BVARC.org for updates, and for information on our weekly in-person events, nets, and other resources. *The November Newsletter IS on the website (link here )*, so please be sure to read through it and find out more about the candidates running in our election. Don't forget about our social media as well! We have a Facebook Page , a Discord Server , and YouTube channel for the club. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> *BVARC Calendar for November 2023:* *BVARC VE Test Session* *Saturday November 4th at 10:30am* You can sign up now on our website (BVARC.org ) to take an FCC license exam to get your ham radio license or upgrade to General or Extra. *Where:* Bayland Community Center 6400 Bissonnet St Houston, TX 77074 *BVARC Board of Directors Meeting* *Sunday November 5th at 5:00pm* Please take note: The BoD is now meeting on the Sunday before the Second Thursday of the month at 5pm (with few exceptions). This meeting will take place on Zoom only, and is open to all members to attend if they would like. *Where:* On Zoom See BVARC.org for the link on the day of the meeting. *BVARC General Meeting* *Thursday November 9th at 7:00pm* This BVARC General Meeting will be *the club elections and **chili * *supper! *For those who are unable to attend in person, we expect to have our Zoom link for the meeting up on the website (BVARC.org) shortly before the meeting or sooner. Please note that voting must be in-person or by proxy vote (see details in the preamble of this email and below from Rick Hiller). *Where:* Volunteer Fire Station #4 16005 Bellaire Blvd. Houston, TX 77083 *Brews with BVARC* *Tuesday November 14th at 6:30pm* The next Brews with BVARC will be at Gristworkz Brewery in Houston. Please check out their website (Gristworkz.com) to see their selection of beers (and non-alcoholic beverages) as well as their great looking eats! We're deviating from our usual "Tuesday before the General Meeting" this time around because that day is our national election day. The brewery has everything from burgers, burritos, and pizza (which they have a deal on each Tuesday). As always, arrive when you can, be safe, be responsible, and let?s have fun! See you there. *Where:* Gristworkz Brewery 1504 Chapman St. Houston, TX 77009 *BVARC Pre-POTA Rag Chew Net* *Saturday November 18th around 8pm* This is not an actual in-person event, but given how new it is I figured a full fledged announcement was justified. Our monthly BVARC POTA event now has a 40m HF net that precedes it the night before at 8pm. The frequency is not set in stone and should be somewhere* near 7.265MHz*, so if you don't hear them there, turn that VFO dial up or down a few kHz until you find them or try finding them using the NetLogger program. I want to thank Sean N5LNK for spearheading this net and taking on the role of Net Controller for it as well. Thanks Sean! *BVARC POTA at Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge* *Sunday November 19th, from 10am to 5pm* This time around we're actually going to a "national wildlife refuge", the site is open to the public from sun-up to sun-down. It's not a park in the traditional sense, but it does count as a "park" per the POTA program definition. Regardless it should be pretty fun, do bring bug spray (hopefully it won't be too bad) and we'll bring our usual sausages, chips, and drinks. Please come on down and join the club for this fantastic event where we get to be outdoors, get on the radio, and even have some great food too. As usual we will have radios and an antenna provided, but if you would like to bring out your own equipment you're more than welcome to do so. *Where:* Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge 24907 FM 2004 Rd Lake Jackson, TX 77566 <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> One last little thing I wanted to share: At our last POTA event at Galveston Island SP while I was doing 40m FT8 with the club call, it appears that WV5Y had a special message to share with us via the FT8 TX 5 macro "GO BVARC" [image: PXL_20231022_192546711.jpg] That's the rundown that I have for now. I will keep the updates coming throughout the month, so stay tuned. Please reach out to me or any BVARC board member if you have any questions or concerns about our club events, volunteering, or anything else ham radio related. We're here for you! Thanks for being a member. Thank you for your time. Have a great November, and 73! *Excerpt from Rick's email:* """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" Please note that voting will be in-person only. You must be a currently paid-up member to receive the paper ballot (we'll confirm your status that night). I plugged in the name as listed in Kori's note and got no answers, thus my confusion. Perhaps I did something wrong. in As I said there are other federal "recreation areas around Texas, usually corps of engineers lakes. Can those receive POTA designations as well? That would open up a lot of possibilities for POTA enthusiasts in Texas. The link is here https://calendar.google.com/calendar/u/0?cid=YTk0YTkxYmRhNWU3ZmY3ODhkNjFjOWExNWVjNzY5M2VlYjUzM2IxYTE1YTc4NDlmNDM4MTRmNzI3NzZlNWNmY0Bncm91cC5jYWxlbmRhci5nb29nbGUuY29tand when you click on it you should be prompted to add the BVARC Calendar to your calendar app. All events for the next 30 days should be on that calendar as well as others as we confirm their dates. > > > > > > Don't forget to check out our website BVARC.org http://bvarc.org/ for updates, and for information on our weekly in-person events, nets, and other resources. The November Newsletter IS on the website (link here https://bvarc.org/newsletter/202311.pdf), so please be sure to read through it and find out more about the candidates running in our election. Our monthly BVARC POTA event now has a 40m HF net that precedes it the night before at 8pm. The frequency is not set in stone and should be somewhere near 7.265MHz, so if you don't hear them there, turn that VFO dial up or down a few kHz until you find them or try finding them using the NetLogger program. I'm reaching out to our community, for a cause that is close to many of us, particularly those with ties to the University of Houston. With the recent change in deanship at our beloved alma mater, a key resource for student development?the UH makerspace?is facing an uncertain future. This makerspace is more than just a room filled with tools; it's a hub of innovation where students from many different disciplines can bring their theoretical knowledge to life. It's a place that mirrors the practical essence of our own endeavors in ham radio. As hands-on learning and experimentation are threatened, we stand to lose a vital part of the creative and technical cultivation that UH has always stood for. In response to this pivotal shift, a petition has been initiated to underscore the necessity of this creative space. The goal is to show the new administration, including our new dean, that such facilities are not just beneficial, but essential for a comprehensive education. Your voice can make a profound impact. If this message resonates with you, please lend your support by signing and sharing the petition here: *https://www.change.org/p/let-uh-engineers-learn-practical-skills * And if you have contacts within the university's leadership, perhaps you might engage them in a conversation about this issue. Thank you for your time, consideration, and for potentially being a part of preserving a space that means so much to the future of our students and the University of Houston Amateur Radio Club. If you missed the update on the website, we have clarified the exact location of our planned activation. *Please see directions and GPS coordinates below.* Of course this is an official BVARC event, and we will be using the club call sign KK5W. If you're interested in participating or just hanging out with us, we're asking folks to come by between *10am **and 5pm*. Given the large size of the park and various roads and entrances, we will of course be monitoring *146.520 MHz simplex* if you would like to reach out to us while in the park for directions. If you can't reach us or don't have a 2m radio, you can call me directly at my cell number below. [image: PXL_20231022_185927586.jpg] This is our first time doing this BVARC event at this POTA location, and our first time going to a National Wildlife Refuge with the club. You may have heard discussion about mosquitoes, and there will be plenty. Please bring your own bug spray if you can. We will bring some in case you forget yours, and we will be using a mosquito fogger (courtesy of Sean N5LNK) to clear the area as needed. Don't be discouraged by the mosquotes though, we will be cooking up some delicious sausages with toppings and chips on the side. I might find a new brand of pickles to bring as well... *Some important details:* - The National wildlife Refuge is *FREE* to access! - *We will have at least 4 HF radios *(40m, 20m, 15m, 10m, and possibly 17m or 80m) that you can use if you don't have your own. So all you need to bring is yourself, some water, and maybe some snacks. - If you'd like to bring your own radio, we have a few antennas you can use (or you can set up yours) and the appropriate filters. But again, you don't *need *to bring any equipment. - *Technician class licensees ARE WELCOME!* You *CAN *operate the stations on ALL HF bands that are available and get POTA credit for contacts you make. You will be required to use the club call sign (ask me or Anthony W5LIC for details upon arrival). - If you're a Tech class license holder and would like to operate on 10m you may do so under your own call sign if the station is open (the 10m band has been wide-open lately). - Of course, you do not have to operate the radios. You can just come out for a fun time with your fellow hams. - 10 contacts are all that are required to "activate" the park. You can log with paper, or with any apps you prefer (we recommend the HAMRS App ). - Sign up on the POTA.app website to upload your logs after the event. *Directions:* Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge Please enter at the *Discovery Center:* 2072 Hoskins Mound Rd. Angleton, TX 77515 Then follow ?Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge Entrance Rd.? heading East for 3.1 miles until you reach the pavilions (see photos below) *POTA Site GPS Coordinates: **29.0597698, -95.2674827* *When:* Sunday November 19th, 2023 10am-5pm *Satellite view of the site:* [image: Screenshot_20231113_075523_Maps.jpg] *Pavilion area:* [image: 20231105_140140.jpg][image: 20231105_140328.jpg] If you've been curious about trying CW, FT8, or Winlink (VARA HF, 2m Packet etc.) we will have those as optional modes you can try (more to come in the future). As before, if you can't make this event, we will be doing this monthly for the foreseeable future. It's a lot of fun, and we hope to see you out there Sunday or any other time we're out at the parks. Contact me or Anthony (W5LIC) if you have any questions about this event. Thanks and 73! I had to delete the 98? wire to make it run. With that wire it did run but with very poor VSWR. I added that wire back in 12? segments and somewhere between 2 and 36? it chokes after a short run speaking of a negative calculated power ( Flux capacitor failure?). At one point I did get VSWR dips at each of the ham bands but 8:1 at best and only 100 kHz wide. I am sure the antenna is good but I am missing something or something didn?t make it to print. As for the December antenna I am not good enough with Eznec to use the coax connections. I would love to see your file and how you built your file. On October 31 you spoke of Auto EZ. I sounds like a very useful tool to handle the multiple runs it takes to bring an antenna on to frequency and optimize desired results. While I know Excel well enough to make a spread sheet I don?t understand the syntax that is spoken of. I need some help. I love the program and antenna modeling and know I have much more to learn. He tells you what to do to build it (sort of) but doesn't tell you what makes it all work. I have looked at it every which way to no avail. The numbers just don't match to a 5/8 wl antenna and I do not understand the reason, values and positions for the capacitor stub and the "matching stub".
