[BVARC] HF 10-10 trouble

Fudge sickle HF is frustrating!!  Tried 10-10 tonight to try to better my
whopping  6.5 mile as my big personal best  my one and only contact after 6
months WOW. I failed miserably again.  Couldn’t  get someone a stone’s
throw away to hear me.  I upgraded the power supply from a 12V car battery
to a constant 13.8V PS.  Spent the past three days on the roof upgrading  my
antenna from a G5RV to a 9 foot vertical mounted even higher at 30 feet
with 10-12 counterpoise just because I read verticals are better for
distance.  I know someone will ask about a tuner and yes I have one but
this is more than a tuner can finesse through with adjustments if no one
can hear me.  Feels like I am just a little fish in a big sea. My rig is an
Icom 718.  Ya…. I know I should have a Kenwood 2000, a 45 foot crank-up
tower and an upgrade from Technician to Extra or General. OK I'll get right
on that, till then....  I will have to work with what I have …   Please
advise.
