From k5cam at arrl.net Wed Sep 1 16:31:20 2010 From: k5cam at arrl.net (Cameron) Date: Wed, 01 Sep 2010 15:31:20 -0500 Subject: [BVARC] BVARC meetings Message-ID: Hi All, It's that time again. The BVARC Board of Directors meeting is Thursday, September 2, at 7 PM at Fuddrucker's in the Fountains Shopping Center. It is on the southbound Southwest Freeway feeder just south of Kirkwood. All club members are welcome to attend. The BVARC general membership meeting is on Thursday, September 9, at 7:30 PM at the Sugar Land Community Center on Matlage Way accross from the post office. The meeting will feature a talk on HSMM-MESH by Andy W5ACM and Kirk KK2Z. If you ever wonder if there is life above HF and VHF, come and learn about High Speed Multi-Media, Mesh networking, and how to turn a 2.4 GHz off-the-shelf Linksys Router into your own amateur radio ?transceiver?. Remember ? all US amateur radio operators (from Technician to Amateur Extra) have privileges in the 2.4 GHz band! New to BVARC is the "Under 15 CW Net" (15 wpm, that is) which meets on Tuesday nights at 7 PM. Check the BVARC web page : http://bvarc.org/index.php?page=cwnet for details. 73, Cam k5cam -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I was finally able to get it back down, jerking about 6 inches at a time. Just as I got it all the way down, the right angle gear box failed completely (very lucky on my part there). I have now removed the winch - motor - gearbox assy and next Tuesday I will take it to a friend of mine to have it rebuilt. So Tuesday comes along and we have some huge lightening storms.I did have my antenna disconnected but the radio, computer, etc. was still plugged into the wall. I was away from home at the time (picking up parts to fix my pool cleaner which also crapped out just as I got home) when the big one hit either at the tower or very close by. My wife said there was a flash and a bang simultaneously. So now my USB interface is dead and the beam won't turn. The rotor controller in microprocessor based (Green Heron) so that's probably the damaged unit but I haven't had time to swap it out with a standard controller yet (I have a spare HAM-4 and box which is about 25 years old but never put into service). Cross your fingers that it is the controller and not the rotor itself (a Tail-Twister), as I don't relish the thought of trying to remove the rotor from the tower. To do so requires extending at least the top section about 2 feet or so. As if that wasn't enough, I was on the air Thursday night and everything is working (other than what I described above). Friday morning the SWR is >3:1 on all bands! Did the SteppIR controller fail? Did the SteppIR itself fail. Attaching my antenna analyzer showed resonance at 112 MHz! What the.? Turns out one of my compression type PL-259's on the LMR-600 was no longer making a good connection. Maybe it was marginal all this time and the lightening strike made some difference so it finally let go. What a coincidence, though. So I fixed that but the station is till a bit crippled until I get the USB interface and rotor system repaired. I'm lucky nothing else went, which is surprising a bit since the USB controller is powered from the computer's USB port and it's still working just fine. The SteppIR still works, as does the rig and amp. Nothing else in the house seems to have been affected. I put a lot of emphasis into grounding the station and hopefully it at least helped to prevent more damage from the hit. I haven't found any evidence of a hit on anything, no burned marks inside or outside, but this tells me that I need to do more grounding of shields, bonding of the AC ground to the SPG and, it the rotor controller got fried, probably replace the lightening suppressor on the rotor cable. Always more work to do. Never enough grounding down here. The SteppIR is pointed SE (and NW with the 180 degree feature). Still able to work some EU on 30 and 40, R1ANP on 30, so I'm not completely off the air. But there was some 10 meter openings to 9X spotted the other day.nothing doing. I would like to work the ZS8.hell if Frosty can work him, I should be able to, right!? Maybe I can get him LP. I was getting "position error" on the Green Heron. Good news: the rotator works fine, turns the beam both directions. Bad news: No direction display on the meter. It seems the "Pot Arm to - End" line is open. I HOPE it is just a bad connection at the terminal block in the junction box at the base of the tower. Also, the 1/8 amp fuse powering the pot circuit in the rotor controller is blown and I don't have a spare here. Coincidence? Some more testing in the next day or two will confirm it one way or the other. If the pot is blown, pulling the rotator to replace it is no easy task. If it does turn out to be the pot, I think either a direct strike or a very close strike with a lot of inducted current would have had to happen. In any case, it seems to me that my grounding and lightening suppression efforts may have saved a lot more equipment. Message-ID: I'm relaying this as there is a need for Volunteer Radio Operators to get involved and help support this activity: *** begin relay *** We have an urgent need for volunteers. The Houston Triathlon/Duathlon, coming up Sunday September 26th is falling short on Ham support. The event will take place almost entirely in the Towne Lake subdivision of Cypress Texas. Starting and ending at the Lone Star College. The triathlon is an Olympic distance event, 1.5K swim, 40K bike, 10K run. The duathlon is a 2K run, 40K bike, 10K run. These events are not casual rides as are most of the public service rides we work. These people are racing the clock. We do not have to cover the swim, at least for now. We tasked with covering the Bike and run portions. The bike and run courses are on the streets, they will have lanes blocked off for the bikes but traffic will not be stopped. To attain the distances required they will loop certain portions of the course. There are numerous areas where traffic, sharp turns and crowded conditions will make things? ?interesting?. There will be a large police presence but we need hams at all spots that are potential hazards. Your day will start very early 04:00 but you will be done by 11:30. I have 5 hams committed and need 35+ to properly cover this event. Mobile units and HT?s can be used. UHF capability will be a must. Many positions can be worked from the comfort of your vehicle. If you can come out please contact me. My contact information is below. I will be more than happy to provide you with all the information you need if you can work the event. We can offer you power, an air conditioned building from which to operate, lunch, dinner with free beer on Saturday night, and a whole lot of students and adults who would like to understand what you do and try to communicate using your equipment (if you allow it). Please reply to me if this is of interest to you. In 2009 Texian Market Day hosted 2,500 students and teachers on Friday and 5,000 people on Saturday. I look forward to working with you. Please vote when you receive the ballot. Rick ? W5RH The ARRL West Gulf Director and Vice Director ballots have been printed and will be in the mail starting Monday. I am a candidate for the volunteer position of Vice Director. The Vice Director basically serves as a cheerleader for the West Gulf team in Texas and Oklahoma and helps represent members at League headquarters. The Vice Director doesn't vote. I am a non-political person. I am not running for prestige or position. I made no back room deals. I'm all about ham radio and wanting to help promote membership in the ARRL. What you see here is what you get. I have three core messages. My first core message asks why 80% of hams in Texas and Oklahoma are choosing to not join the ARRL. I believe that to start solving this problem the League should follow the marketing strategy of the NRA. NRA dues are $35, not $39, first year memberships are discounted at many shows, members get a choice of magazines to receive and the price of a life membership is substantially discounted from time to time. My second core message says we must re-focus our efforts on ham recruiting in high school clubs and scout organizations. The ARRL has made some pretty good efforts in this area but a lot more needs to be done. My third core message is that I will push for expansion of Technician, General and Advanced class band privileges. Since this pushes the button of some hot headed Extra's let me talk about it. A blind friend of mine in college worked really hard to get his general class license. He loved to talk on low bands with his many ham radio friends. When the ARRL convinced the FCC to adopt incentive licensing my friend became so bitterly disappointed in the ARRL that he sold his rig and gave up his ham license. I tried my best to talk him out of it since ham radio was his window to the outside world but he just wouldn't listen. This made a lasting impression on me. I was and still am convinced that incentive licensing is a major disincentive to the growth of ham radio. Here is what I will push. The Novice class license should be reinstated for brand new hams with a limited license term. All Technician license holders should be automatically moved to General class. All General class hams should be granted full digital privileges on all bands. All Advanced class license holders should be automatically moved to Extra class and all new Extra class applicants should be required to pass a send and receive Morse code test. To help you get to know me better here's a little about my background: * Ham for 51 years * Ex Navy CW receive operator at NAVCOMSTA Guam during the Vietnam era * Retired Certified Public Accountant * Muscogee (Creek) Nation Citizen * Member of various amateur club, DX, VHF and AMSAT groups * Past president of the Tulsa Repeater Organization * Past president of the Oklahoma Association of Tax Representatives * 36 years auditing, tax and finance experience, including lobbying the Oklahoma Legislature, for Explorer Pipeline Company, before retirement * Have traveled extensively in South Texas, Central Texas, East Texas, North Texas, Southern Oklahoma, Central Oklahoma and Eastern Oklahoma * Have traveled extensively over much of the world in the last few years. * Still happily married to my college sweetheart. * Recipient of the Court of Honor award of Kappa Alpha Order * Donated free C and Ku band commercial uplink time to "This Week in Amateur Radio" and to the "Houston Amsat Net" for many years. * Have stood out in the rain and yes, even snow shivering at 5 in the morning at Dayton many times just waiting for the flea market to open. * Have been chigger bit and sweaty under canvas, while trying to start runs which weren't there in the wee hours of the morning on numerous field days. I can't make the Belton HamEXPO because my wife has told me that I will die a painful death if I don't take her to her 50th high school reunion that weekend. I do plan to be at the upcoming Paris Texas Hamfest, the Lufkin Hamfest, Texoma Hamarama and the Enid Hamfest, all at my own expense. I'll be wearing an ARRL logo shirt and I really look forward to meeting and listening to you, really listening to you. What's not to like? W5RH W0KIE MICHAEL R REYNOLDS TULSA, OK 74145 The ARRL West Gulf Director and Vice Director ballots have been printed and will be in the mail starting Monday. We had nine check-ins last evening 9/21/10. Conditions were very quiet on 10 Meters (28.043). W5TOM, WS5H, W5TKZ, K5CAM, KB5OG (Lee), K5NDB, W5HFF, KK5W (via WS5H) and W5RH(NC) Thanks to all that checked in. We dedicated the net to our friend Claude, W5HFY, who passed away on Monday. Net News - Tom's new 10 meter wire vertical design was worked by Roy last night. Roy was stronger than with his normal horizontal wire, thus providing more empirical evidence of vertical polarization working best in local 10 Meter situations. The antenna and matching network is 17 feet long and fed with user supplied 50 ohm coax. Anyone wishing to get on the net, but does not have an antenna can request one of Tom's designs. These antennas are provided, gratis, courtesy of Tom, W5TOM. I have 3 sitting in my shack. Send me an e-mail if you would like one. Note: this antenna is broad banded enough for use on the Ten/Ten SHOT Net on 28.488 USB taking place at 8PM local time, immediately after the CW net. One thing is starting to happen. You can recognize the station just by the way they send and sound. Proof of this was after the net, Tom sent "73 Claude CU later W5TOM (dit dit)" after which followed 'dit dit' from all of the checkins, one by one. All not having to ID in order to tell who it was. Nice, indeed.! The BVARC Under 15 QRP Net meets each Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM Local (0000 UTC Wednesday) on 28.043 All Amateur Radio operators are welcome to check in. Let's try a sked at 6:00 pm today: Frequency: 144.550 FM simplex. If no contact is possible then QSY to the N5A repeater at 6:30 pm. QRG 145.370 (-600 kHz, CTCSS 123.0 Hz) This repeater is located on the roof of my office building. Others are welcome to join the QSO. I've connected the dish with a bunch of adapters (which is less than optimal at 2.3 GHz) so there is room for improvement on my side too. In any case the WTR54 and the amplifier should be mounted right next to the dish for minimal loss. We should also meet first and try if our network settings really work at close distance. I (KF5IEX) was inside my office, 8th floor, with HT and a 6 1/2 inch rubber antenna. Eddie (NU5K) used a Kenwood TRX (TS2000?) with the power turned down to the lowest setting. However he used a vertical antenna on the roof of his office. A contact with Eddie on the street with a HT was not possible. Therefore we're sure that we need to go on the roof on both sides. However, because of the high signal strength there may be a chance that a 2.4 GHz directional link may work. We'll both get tripods to mount the dishes and rigs in a portable way an we'll try to meet later this week. Whoever is interested is still welcome to join. If you are interested in adding another mode to your ham radio activity and wish to "ride the coattails" of the new and successful BVARC Slow Speed CW Net, then you can either learn or brush up on your code in October. The course will consist of 4 classes, each 2 to 2 1/2 hours.? All 4 are necessary for continuity. The dates are Monday, Oct. 18, Thursday the 21st, Monday the 25th and Thursday the 28th.? The location is in Sugar Land.? Exact location will be provided after you confirm. There is no fee for this class.? However you really have to make all 4 classes to make it effective.? Ross Lawler, W5HFF and I, John Chauvin, K5IZO are ARRL Registered Instructors and will teach the class.? I have the lesson plans from the last time, so it is a mature curruculum.? There will be lots of "show and tell" also.? Bring a flash drive with you so I can give you the software and the day's lessons. Let me hear from you at k5izo at yahoo.com??? DO NOT do a "reply to" this e-mail as it will go to the entire list server.? I will then personally respond with more information. Tnx es 73 de John, K5IZO -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
